without power two weeks after hurricane sandy slammed into the northeast. they're not the only ones suffering. folks in new york city usually head to coney island to line up for music park -- amusement park rides but now they're lining up just to get something to eat. jonathan hunt is there. jonathan, how is it going? >> reporter: extraordinary to see scenes like this in 20th century america. some people have just trying to get the basics of life. they're picking up canned goods over here. over here we have well, military-style meals ready to eat. gatorade bottles, cases of water. and everything is numbered. they're allowed to take two canned goods. one gatorade. up to a case of water and then there is laundry detergent further down there as well. a lot of these people live in the project buildings behind me, rick, where they have been struggling to get by for two weeks now since hurricane sandy hit. i have to say the spirit we found among most of the people here, while they acknowledge their difficulty they're all determined to push through. listen. >> we don't have any electricity

the program being overhauled as a result of what happened because of sandy? >> okay. in reference to your first question, i don't think, you know, it's a day after the election. i don't, you know, what is going to happen with the dscc. first you'd have to ask people, including senator gillibrand, whether she'd want it, and i haven'ted talked to her about it yet. we talked about elections and congratulations, and she did a great job in the senate in the first six years, first two years and will do a great job in the next six years. she's a great partner to have, and i'm glad she won an overwhelming victory and proud of the victory that she won. in terms of flood insurance, obviously, you know, we have huge damage in new york. it is incredible. um, i flew by helicopter the first day with the mayor and a little later, next day with the governor. and you saw how broad the damage was, you know, it wasn't just one community or two communities, but just spread out all over a huge area, huge metropolitan area. and then for the four days after that or five or six spent time on the ground, and you
district and throughout my state in the aftermath of hurricane sandy was nothing less than catastrophic. mr. pallone: but i really want to talk about the rebuilding effort today and what we need to do over the long term. the amount of outpouring, if you will, from volunteers, from just regular people in the district was just overwhelming. and i want to thank fema. i want to thank the red cross, the salvation army, all the different groups that are out there and continue to be out there today helping out with in effort. but the outpouring of volunteers from our own district and from new jersey was gist incredible. -- was just incredible. a few days ago i remember going to union beach, which was one of the towns hardest hit, and seeing so many people bringing food and clothing and cleaning supplies and one guy owns a pizza place, brought in a pizza oven and was making pizzas. another guy brought in a tv so people could watch tv at the center. where people come to sign up for fema. it just was amazing and it showed the spirit, if you will, of the people that they were willing to do that. but t
